  Can Pilates help me lose weight?

ANY exercise you do can help you lose weight! The usual formula applies; if you expend more energy than you consume, i.e. you have a calorie deficit, you will lose weight. This is an unchanging law of nature.

The question most people ask me is slightly different. What they REALLY want to know is; "Will Pilates help me lose weight QUICKLY, preferably by next Tuesday?"

The answer is no. Pilates is not an exercise system designed for quick weight loss. Which I don’t agree with anyway. Sorry about that; shoot me :).

Even Joseph Pilates never claimed that doing only his exercises was enough to get you completely fit.

An average Beginner Pilates class lasting one hour will typically burn as many calories as walking for the same time - approximately 240 Calories. Not too shabby I’m sure you’ll agree, but if you compare it with an hour on the cross trainer which will burn 500-600 Calories you can see Pilates doesn't even come close. So to answer the question “Will Pilates help me lose weight?” the answer is yes, but only in conjunction with a cardio and strength training programme.

However, when you put these three factors together, then the results are gang-busting!

In fact, I am so excited about the fitness potential of cardio, strength and Pilates exercises put together that I’m going to write some stuff on it, and we may even produce an ebook. Watch this space!.

A note to the ladies

Don't let the myth "If I train with weights, I'll end up with huge bulging muscles" put you off. The truth is, women just do not have enough testosterone to allow for large increases in muscle size. For you, weight training and Pilates will result in sleek, toned and shapely arms, legs and butt.

So remember. A balanced exercise programme combining elements of cardiovascular, weights and Pilates training will give you the best and longest lasting results. You will achieve your fitness goals, look good and feel great! Just maybe not by Tuesday...:)
